This collection consists of official reports, orders and a limited amount of correspondence relating primarily to base site surveys made in the World War II period by teams of which Admiral Byrd was the senior member. He served on the South Pacific Advanced Base Inspection Board which toured bases in the south Pacific in May and June 1942. The report submitted by the Board describes found at each base and analyses lessons learned in planning and equipping these bases. The report contains recommendations applicable to the individual bases and others designed to be helpful in the planning of future advanced bases. On 1 September 1943, in compliance with a series of letters from the President to the Secretary of the Navy, the Commander-in-Chief United States Fleet and Chief of Naval Operations ordered Byrd to assume direction of a survey and "investigation of certain islands in the East and South Pacific in connection with national defense and commercial air bases and routes." The members of the Special Navy Mission sailed from Balboa, Canal Zone on USS Concord in December 1943. Some materials also relate to the Admiral's work with the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey.

Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an American naval officer and explorer.
